College Guidance

Students in all grades are encouraged to take challenging courses, work hard, and look ahead to their futures beyond high school. Preparation for college is an ongoing process, detailed below. The college counselor works individually with students during all stages. Every student has ready access to information in the College Guidance room, pictured at right. Students take national standardized tests annually, to measure their academic progress and determine career goals. High school students have access to Number2.com, an online SAT test preparation site.

Juniors, seniors, and their parents use Naviance, our online college database, to search for appropriate colleges, compare their grades and test scores with those required by colleges, and keep track of the application process and deadlines. Each student and parent is given a registration code to open a Naviance account at www.workspacek12.naviance.com/orme.

8th grade to Juniors

Each October, all 8th graders and Freshmen take the Explore test, while all sophomores and juniors take the PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude and National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test).

Juniors

In the spring semester, all juniors are scheduled into College Guidance once a week as they begin their college search. They go over all the material in the Orme College Guidance Handbook and take the national SAT and ACT tests. They are encouraged to take the SAT Subject Tests as well.

Seniors

In the fall, seniors also meet weekly for college guidance until all their application materials have been submitted to the colleges of their choice. They may also retake the SAT and ACT. In October, all seniors attend the NACAC Greater Phoenix College Fair where students may speak with over two hundred college admissions officers and gather information about a wide variety of colleges and universities from around the country.

The Orme School Profile is sent to colleges with each student transcript. It describes our curriculum, grading system, grade distribution, test scores, and college matriculation.

All college applications and accompanying documents are mailed out by the first week of December. Colleges notify applicants of acceptance or denial by the middle of April. Students then have until May 1 to make their final decision and notify each college.
