Spring Caravan Trips

For eight days in May, half the School takes to the field on a variety of faculty-led trips. Students camp out under the stars amid some of the most spectacular country in the world, getting an intensive exposure to the stunning landscapes, diverse cultures, and rich history of the vast natural province of the West known as the Colorado Plateau, which rises just north of the School.

Students challenge themselves, doing things they never thought they could do in remote, magnificent places they never knew existed. They learn self reliance, cooperation, respect, and tolerance from personal discovery and direct experience.

Caravan is an unsurpassed educational experience as well as an exciting adventure. All students are required to participate at least every other year. Options include canyoneering, backpacking, mountain biking, and vehicle camping in the many national parks of the region.

The Caravan trips program, unique to the Orme School and one of the first of its kind, began in 1932 when a dozen students set out with all their gear and food packed in an old cattle truck. That journey continues today in what has become one of the most memorable of Orme experiences.
